Historically most residents think of device we installed to manage the lake levels in 2006 as a beaver deceiver. The beaver deceiver of the past used at Spring Lake and the Lake Leveler discussed now are very similar designs. Currently, technically beaver deceiver is used to refer to a different device which keeps the beaver away from the dam building spot. In fact, though what was installed was what we now call a lake leveler.
The term used by most companies to refer to the design in question is Lake Leveler or Pipe & Cage (Flexible Leveler) System. The Lake Leveler we need is one that is more robust and should be longer lasting and require less maintenance. It will be similar to the leveler we used in 2006 but with a protective cage around the inlet and large 12" pipe that carries the water. These are used throughout Washington and the country to effectively manage lake levels in the presence of beavers.
A 2006 report from Tufts University showed that 93% of clients were satisfied with the results of beaver flow device installations done by professionals. We are working with Beaver's Northwest to create a plan and proposal for Spring lake's lake level management.
